It started with a simple
realization behind the lens.

I’m Ben, the founder of First Light, and I’m a photographer. For years I’ve spent my time behind the lens with young families, documenting the earliest, most fleeting days of a child’s life. Somewhere along the way I began turning a family’s first-year photographs into a single illustrated book — and watching someone open one for the first time changed how I thought about my work.

People cried. They held the book like it was already an heirloom — the one thing they’d carry out of a burning house. I realized this was the thing they would keep.

But there was a limit I couldn’t get past. As one person, behind one camera, I could only ever make these for a small number of families — the ones close enough for me to photograph in person. The parents who wanted a book but lived a state away, or on the other side of the world, I simply couldn’t reach. It never sat right with me that something this meaningful could only belong to the families who happened to live nearby.

So I set out to solve it. First Light is my way of bringing that same book to families anywhere in the world — the same care, the same materials, the same idea of a year made to hold — working entirely from the photographs they already have. To make that possible, the illustrations are created with the help of AI, guided by the same principles I developed behind the camera. That choice is deliberate: it keeps the work far more affordable than commissioning every page by hand, it shortens the time it takes to make your book, and it lets me do the thing I set out to do — put a beautiful, meaningful keepsake into the hands of as many families as possible.

What hasn’t changed is the part that makes it an heirloom. Every book is still printed on handmade Amalfi cotton paper and bound entirely by hand in Italy, the way fine books have been made for generations. The photographs and the story are yours. The craft that turns them into something built to outlast us is ours.

Years of thoughtful
exploration.

2022

First Light was first conceptualized — born from a simple but powerful idea: that the most meaningful memories deserve more than digital storage.

2022–2024

Years of thoughtful exploration followed — refining artistic styles, sourcing exceptional materials, and developing processes that could honor each family's story with care and consistency.

2025

That vision was fully realized. Every detail — from the way images are translated into illustrations to the quality of the paper and binding — has been intentionally chosen to create a keepsake that feels as lasting as the memories it holds.

More than a book.
A reinterpretation.

We don't think of these as photo books. They're more like illustrated journals — your child's first year, seen through a photographer's eye. The photographs give us the story. The illustrations give it permanence.

The everyday moments

We believe the unscripted photos — the ones taken at 2am, in the kitchen, on the living room floor — hold a truth all their own. They sit alongside professional portraits, not beneath them. Together, they tell the whole story.

Art that lasts

Every material we use is archival grade. Every binding is hand-sewn. Every illustration is printed on cotton paper made in Italy since the Renaissance.

Made for them

This book is not just for you. It's for your child to hold at ten, at thirty, at sixty — and understand that they were cherished from the very beginning.

The first light

Throughout that first year, the first light of every day is a moment to be cherished. We built this studio to make sure that light is never lost.
