One of a kind

From the first days home
to their first birthday

Just as a child's understanding of the world deepens with each passing month, so too does each illustration grow in richness and detail. Early pages begin with simple lines and open space. By year's end, your child's world is rendered in full color.

01
Month 2 — pencil illustration of sleeping baby, pure line work
Pure Line
Months 1–3. Clean, spare illustrations — the whole world rendered in simple, loving strokes.
02
Month 5 — pencil and watercolor illustration, soft color emerging
First Wash
Months 4–6. Soft watercolor washes bloom behind confident line work.
03
Month 9 — rich watercolor illustration with full color and detail
Growing Detail
Months 7–9. Color and texture emerge. Backgrounds, surroundings, the full scene.
04
Month 12 — full watercolor illustration, year's end
Full Radiance
Months 10–12. Rich, full-color, and deeply personal — every detail of your child's world.

Every page tells
its own story.

Pencil sketches in the early months. Watercolor washes as the year unfolds. By the final pages, a fully realized portrait — luminous and personal. And just as no two children grow quite the same way, no two books are ever alike: yours is shaped entirely by your child's own year, one of a kind from cover to cover.

The Materials

Made to stand
the test of time

We source only archival-grade materials — the kind used by museums and libraries. Your book will not yellow, crack, or fade. The paper, the inks, the binding — all archival grade, built to look as good in thirty years as the day it arrives.

Handmade Amalfi Cotton Paper
Handmade Amalfi cotton paper with natural deckled edges

Every page is printed on handmade cotton paper from the historic mills of Amalfi, Italy — crafted by hand using a medieval family tradition passed down for centuries. Pure cotton rag paper, no chemicals, no whitening agents. The natural deckled edges are unique to each sheet, giving every book an unrepeatable character.

A Gift Worth Giving

Made for everyone
who loves them

A First Light storybook isn't only for parents to make — it's one of the most meaningful gifts you can give a new family. Commission it for your own child, or surprise your partner, the new parents, or the grandparents in your life with an heirloom they'll keep for generations.

For Mom & Dad

The perfect gift for new parents — a beautifully bound record of their baby's first year that they'll return to long after the photos disappear into a phone.

A Keepsake for Your Child

Create it now and place it in their hands one day. A first-birthday keepsake that becomes their own story to keep — and, in time, to share with a family of their own.

To & From Grandparents

A heartfelt gift between generations. Grandparents love giving it as a milestone present — and it's a thoughtful way to celebrate the grandparents who treasure every photo.

From an Aunt, Uncle or Godparent

A gift unlike anything else they'll open. Aunts, uncles, and godparents can commission a book as a surprise — and we'll keep it between us right up until it arrives.

Commission Legacy

Every book is made to order and entirely one of a kind. We keep our commissions few, so each receives an artisan's full attention. You confirm your photos and details at checkout, then our bookmakers craft it by hand — the subtle variations are part of the art.

Questions, answered

How long does it take?
Most books are ready in four to six weeks, depending on the edition. We begin work within three business days of your order.
How many books do you make?
Only a limited number each month. Because every book is bound and finished entirely by hand in our atelier in Italy, there is a natural limit to how many we can craft well — and we would rather keep it that way than rush. Ordering stays open year-round; there is no countdown and no waitlist to join. It simply means that when you commission yours, you are one of a small number of families we are crafting for that season — and your book is given the time it deserves.
What if my photos aren't professional?
They don't need to be. Everyday phone photos are exactly what most families send — the kind taken on the couch, in the kitchen, half-asleep at 2am. Professional photos work just as beautifully, and many books are a blend of both. What matters most is the light: images that are well lit, with soft, sculpted light, translate best into illustration. We work from the photos you already have, and our image guide helps you choose ones that shine.
Will my book look exactly like the examples?
Every book is one of a kind. We work from the photographs and details you provide, but because each one is illustrated and bound by hand, no two are ever identical — and that's the point. The subtle variations are what make it an heirloom rather than a print: as singular and unrepeatable as the year it remembers. You confirm all your photos and details at checkout, and our bookmakers take it from there with great care.
What if something isn't right?
At checkout, we'll have you confirm every detail — colors, names, dates, the inscription, and so on — and we'll use those details to craft your book. If it ever arrives damaged, or you think there's a mismatch between what you confirmed and what you received, we'll do our best to make it right — just send us a message.
Is it really made by hand?
Yes — where it counts most. Every book is assembled, wrapped, and sewn entirely by hand in an atelier in northern Italy, on archival handmade Amalfi cotton paper with genuine leather or leatherette covers. The illustrations themselves are created with the help of AI, working from your photographs, and are then printed and bound by hand into the finished book.
How are the illustrations made?
Your photographs are transformed into original illustrations using a custom, AI-assisted process — guided by the same principles our founder developed as a photographer. We chose this approach on purpose: it lets us offer a hand-finished heirloom at a fraction of what it would cost to commission every page by hand, make your book in weeks rather than months, and bring the same keepsake to families anywhere in the world. Each illustration is a unique interpretation of your photos — never an exact copy, and never identical to any other book.
How many photos do I need?
One or two favorite photos per month of your child's first year, plus a handful of special moments. Your edition sets the total — 15 images for Keepsake, 22 for Heirloom, or 30 for Legacy. You'll upload them right in the order form, and you can move back and forth between steps as you go.

The first year
goes so fast.

Before you know it, the tiny details start to blur — the exact way they looked at three months, at six, at nine. This book holds all of it: every month, every milestone, made from your own photographs and kept somewhere you'll actually look.
